 Pregnancy Accuracy Now Tested On-line
Chris Richards & Associates have recently launched PregCHECK, a web-based, interactive tool to assess competency when using real time ultrasound (RTU).
RTU has become a key component in modern piggery management, enabling pregnancy diagnosis from as early as 21 days post-conception. Early detection of non-pregnant sows contributes to decreased non-productive sow days and hence a reduction in piggery production costs.
PregCHECK enables producers and piggery workers to self-assess their skills and accuracy in evaluating ultrasound images. It also provides a mechanism for employers to obtain confidence in their employees’ competencies, ensuring that the important task of pregnancy diagnosis is being optimally performed.

“The development of this program was initiated as a result of requests from clients who had recently purchased a machine. They needed a tool not only to revisit the skills of current staff, but also a system whereby new employees could be easily trained.”

Dr Dunlop also reiterates the importance of having highly skilled employees carrying out the essential task of pregnancy testing.
“PregCHECKhas been developed after the capture of hundreds of RTU images from sows at all stages of pregnancy. Images are randomly presented and interspersed with ultrasound images from non- pregnant sows. Participants make an assessment using a “tick-a-box”, quiz-style format and their results are combined to give a total score upon completion of the task. Individuals can revisit as often as they wish and their results for each visit can be stored to allow continual monitoring for improvement. “
The PregCHECK program is currently available at no cost to Chris Richards & Associates clients. In alliance with the manufacturer of the WED 2000A RTU, PregCHECK is now also available to Australian pig producers who own or are in the process of purchasing the WED 2000A RTU machine.
The WED 2000A ultrasound, also used in human medicine, is a modern, innovative, hand-held scanner. Features include a waterproof probe, freeze key, zoom function, long -life rechargeable battery and protective lightweight metal case.
